Samuel Ekanem: Designing for Impact in Health Tech

Ever wondered what it’s like to be a Product Designer and Tech Lead shaping the future of health tech? We caught up with Samuel Ekanem of Advantage Health Africa to get a glimpse into his daily routine, career journey, and the mindset that keeps him at the top of his game.

Samuel shares how he balances work, learning, and mentorship, all while making time for his favorite meal (fried rice and dodo, of course 🍛😂). If you’re an aspiring designer, tech enthusiast, or just curious about the life of an agba tech bro, keep reading for valuable insights, tips, and a look at the tools that power his success.

Can you describe a typical day in your role? What does your morning routine look like?

First, I ensure my water bottle is filled 😂. Then I do a quick review of my schedule and priorities. I check emails, Slack messages, and any urgent requests from the team or stakeholders. If there are any design handoffs or pending approvals, I address them first thing in the morning. I also take time to review analytics or user feedback to inform design decisions.

Then I eat dodo and fried rice (not always though) around 10:30am.

How and when did you get started in your professional career?

I started my professional career over five years ago, but my journey into design/Graphics began much earlier with a deep interest in creating intuitive and engaging design experiences. I initially studied Information Tech and BIS, and started exploring design through self-learning, online courses, and certifications.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals amidst daily distractions?

I stay motivated and focused by aligning my work with a bigger vision which is creating intuitive health tech solutions that make a real impact.

To stay productive, I structure my day with clear priorities, use productivity tools, and schedule deep work sessions while minimizing distractions.

Engaging with design communities and mentoring on platforms like Design Lab and ADPlist also keeps me inspired, while regular reflection and short breaks help maintain balance. Ultimately, a mix of discipline, passion, and continuous learning drives me to stay on track despite daily challenges.

What tools or resources do you use to manage your time and tasks effectively?

I use Trello for task management with teammates, Figma & FigJam for design collaboration, and Google Calendar for time tracking. For learning and mentorship, I engage with IxDF, ADPlist, and Design Lab communities to stay updated and connected.

How do you continue to learn and grow in your field?

I engage in mentorship on ADPlist & Design Lab, attend design conferences, take courses and actively collaborate with cross-functional teams to refine my skills.

How do you recharge from work?

I recharge by taking short breaks during the day, engaging in creative activities, and disconnecting from screens when needed. Outside work, I enjoy swimming, traveling, exploring new design inspirations, and mentoring—which keeps me refreshed while giving back to the community.

If you weren’t doing what you currently do, what would you be doing?

If I weren’t in Design and Tech, I’d be counseling and mentoring people on their career paths, helping them navigate challenges, discover their strengths, and achieve their goals. I find fulfillment in guiding others, and this aligns with the work I do on platforms like Design Lab and ADPlist, where I offer support and advice to aspiring designers.

What advice would you give to someone looking to kickoff their professional career?
